Abstract
Speaking from different voices and actors such as academics, activists and researchers about the consumption of substances considered “illegal”, such as hard drugs and, in particular, cannabis -marijuana-, is still necessary in our current context due to the increase in users and the criminalization they suffer due to the lack of public policies to regulate consumption. In recent years, not only in Mexico, but also in different regions of Latin America, the United States and worldwide, there has been an increase in the consumption of drugs such as cocaine, opioids or amphetamines, which brings with it a series of social problems that result in high rates of violence due to the confrontation between criminal groups responsible for the production and distribution of these substances; the stigmatization and collective rejection of those who consume them; health problems; increased deaths due to overdoses, as well as environmental problems. According to official figures from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), during the last decade there has been a 20% increase in drug consumption worldwide and a total of 292 million users have been reported by 2022.
