A model of correction pattern for argumentative essays

This paper aims to describe the characteristics of an analytic rating scale that was used to assess 4 041 argumentative essays produced by high school students. These essays are part of a wider research project whose objective was to design an exam (Examen de Habilidades Lingüísticas, exhaling), in order to evaluate the linguistic abilities that high school students have when applying for a university within Mexico City. It follows the theoretical framework of the Marco Curricular Común del Bachillerato. After careful analysis of the complex process for developing this type of scales, we conclude that using the scale itself and sharing this experience might be useful to help students develop a better understanding of what it is expected from them when writing these types of essays and provide teachers with focalized feedback.
